Especially put together for newcomers, but hopefully also useful to our conference veterans. If you are one of the the oldies, come and share what you wish you had known before your first DebConf!

One of DebConf’s recurring activities is the Key Signing Party. It helps Debian strengthen and expand its web of trust. This session will:

- Explain how keysigning is done in a DebConf setting
- Validate the SHA256 hash of the KSP coordination document
- Explain how to participate to people who did not send their keys in time

Once DebConf is closer, we will link from this talk proposal to the relevant documents you should have in hand for the keysigning party.

For the third consecutive year, the Free Software Development course at the University of São Paulo (IME-USP) is bringing students into the Linux kernel and Free Software ecosystem. In "Episode III" of our journey, we evolved our curriculum to increase the Debian project's prominence: students are no longer just learning Debian packaging in isolated workshops; they are actively contributing to Debian in the second phase of the course. This talk shares the challenges, achievements, and actionable strategies from three years of bridging academia and real-world Free Software collaboration.

The audience will leave with actionable strategies to replicate our approach, including: (1) evolving a course curriculum to real Kernel Linux, Debian, and Free Software contributions; (2) assessing student success and engagement beyond code; (3) sustainable engagement strategies for educators and Free Software communities. Whether you are a professor seeking curriculum ideas, a maintainer looking to grow your contributor base, or a newcomer curious about academic pathways, this talk offers a road-tested blueprint for Free Software education.

Age verification and digital identity systems are increasingly being pushed into operating system-level APIs. This talk presents the Brazilian “ECA Digital” consultation as a case study of how these requirements are being translated into technical infrastructure while still under active definition, with ongoing exploration involving a public research institution (IPT) and industry actors such as Lenovo.
We focus strictly on the technical dimension of emerging systems design, avoiding legal or policy discussion. The goal is to analyze implications for open source systems, particularly interoperability, privacy, and the risk of proprietary implementations becoming de facto standards.

This BoF opens a discussion on how open source communities can engage with emerging age verification and identity API standards being developed in Brazil and elsewhere.
We will explore technical challenges around interoperability, privacy-preserving design, and the role of Linux and Debian-based ecosystems in preventing vendor lock-in. The session is focused on system design and implementation perspectives, not legal or policy analysis, and aims to gather input and identify possible directions for collaboration and reference implementations.

- pensamiento computacional,
- resolución de problemas,
- cultura colaborativa.
- Ventajas pedagógicas: auditabilidad, replicabilidad, cero costo de licencias, hardware reutilizable.
- Estrategias para docentes y directivos: migraciones, talleres, acompañamiento.

- Herramientas accesibles: ofimática, multimedia, privacidad, control parental.
- Cómo Debian reduce dependencia tecnológica y promueve soberanía digital.

Debian is about Free Software, yes. But Debian must also take part in the Real World™. This means, we have to work on several aspects of software development that are non-technical.

In early 2026, we re-formed the Debian Data Protection Team (and we thank the previous team members for their work!). It now consists of:

- Aigars Mahinovs
- Andrew M. A. Cater
- Bart Martens
- Emmanuel Arias
- Gunnar Wolf
- Kiran S Kunjumon
- Salvo Tomaselli

This is not a very visible team, but it is important for many issues, some of them legal, some of them that do have a visible impact on how we do things.

With this BoF, we want to introduce our work as a team, plus open the stage for any questions you might have. The BoF _will_ have video coverage and recording, so for any confidential issues you might have, we will ask you to come talk with us afterwards.

Contributing to free software communities goes far beyond writing code, opening pull requests, or fixing bugs. Projects rarely fail due to technical limitations—they fail due to human burnout, poorly resolved conflicts, and relationships that break down over time.

In this talk, we will discuss the soft skills that truly sustain Free Software communities and that almost never appear in the documentation: clear communication, empathy with beginners, healthy disagreement, emotional responsibility, and consistency in collaboration.

The goal is to provoke reflection on the role of each contributor in the health of the project and present practical triggers that can be applied daily, regardless of technical level or experience.

Because, in the end, code scales—people don't.

Why do we teach science?
------------------------

When I taught physics and chemistry, students could experiment. This is
very different from accepting "scientific facts". To make young scientists,
we must teach them to resist to fake information.

**Free-Libre Software**, **free-libre hardware** allow students to experiment and
play with reality with no black-box device blurring it.

This talk is about _didactic and scientific software you can find in Debian_,
and how to build a nomadic USB drive, with all of it inside.

In this talk, I'll share how I used Openqa to set up "start-stop" tests for LXQt, Cinnamon, and XFCE desktop environments. I'll show how these tests launch apps, check the user interface, and make sure they close properly. This way, we can be confident that Debian Live images are truly functional, not just bootable.

This presentation is for QA engineers, developers, and Linux enthusiasts who want to automate manual testing. It's especially useful if you're working on desktop stability or curious about how openQA handles different environments.

Attendees will learn how to write reusable test scripts for various desktops and how to spot failures that boot tests might miss. I'll also talk about how this helps improve Debian's reliability by providing a final check before release.

Additionally, I will discuss my journey to joining the Debian project through my Outreachy internship (a newcomer from an underrepresented background as a woman of colour), my tasks/contributions, and their impact. It will serve as a form of encouragement to newcomers to the Debian project and the openqa testing project.

Debugging early-stage bootloaders has historically been a fragmented experience, often requiring vendor-specific tools or customized logics. However, as the industry moves toward standardized boot flows, the UEFI Debug Support Protocol has emerged as a critical bridge.

In this talk, I will share the journey of implementing this protocol within U-Boot and LK (Little Kernel). We will explore the nuances of contributing to EDK2, and how these implementations simplify debugging the UEFI applications. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how standardized debug protocols can unify the development experience across different firmware ecosystems.

Just before the Debian Trixie freeze, I worked on upgrading Debian’s PulseAudio package to the upstream version 17.0 for improved hardware support on devices I care about. However, it depended on a new upstream version of the WebRTC Audio Processing library, which hadn’t been updated for years in the Debian archive, and would fail to build on the mips64el architecture. Being somewhat familiar with running foreign-architecture programs through emulation for ARM systems, I decided to try fixing it without knowing anything about MIPS…

That mips64el architecture might be gone from the archive now, but Debian supports a great deal of different CPU architectures. So, this talk is about ways to build, run, test, investigate and fix foreign-architecture programs and packages on your ordinary AMD64 system, from an advanced beginner, with a real-life example. Maybe even mentions of other common problems that might come up, tricks and solutions you can use. But the main point is, architecture-specific bugs are not arcane magic that only wizards can comprehend. Probably.

Bazel has undergone significant architectural shifts between version 4 and version 9, including the stabilization of Bzlmod, the removal of legacy workspace features, and evolving bootstrap requirements.

This BoF session will focus on:

- Bootstrap Hurdles: Strategies for handling the complex Java and C++ dependencies required to build Bazel 9 from source without pre-built binaries.

- Bzlmod & External Dependencies: Addressing the transition from WORKSPACE to the Bazel Module system within the constraints of the Debian build environment.

- Maintenance Workflows: Best practices for managing Debian-specific patches and experimental builds.

- Collaborative Packaging: Identifying shared pain points among users of the AI framework, Android-Cuttlefish, and other projects that rely on modern Bazel features.

Artificial Intelligence agents are often presented as something that requires expensive GPUs, paid subscriptions, and large cloud infrastructures. But what if you only have a small budget, a Debian server, and curiosity?

In this talk, I will show how I built a functional AI agent using mostly open technologies and low-cost services. The project combines Debian Project, Linode infrastructure, OpenRouter APIs, Telegram as the user interface, and Python as the glue connecting everything together.

The session will cover practical lessons learned while deploying and maintaining the bot, including hosting considerations, API costs, open-source AI models, automation, limitations of low-budget environments, and why Debian remains an excellent platform for experimentation and self-hosting.

This is not a corporate “AI strategy” presentation. It is a practical, honest, and accessible look at building useful AI systems with limited resources and open tools.

This presentation explores the critical shift from cloud-based Artificial Intelligence to local, sovereign implementations. It addresses the technical and ethical challenges of modern AI, including the "Superalignment Paradox" and the risks of data dependency and post-truth. By analyzing the pros and cons of cloud versus local models (such as Gemma, QWEN, and DeepSeek), we advocate for technological sovereignty, especially within State infrastructures. The session concludes with a practical overview of tools like Ollama running on proxmox and debian with gpu passthrough technology and the current computing power in Argentina, demonstrating how local hardware and open-source software can ensure data privacy, security, and strategic independence.

The Linux kernel uses mailing lists as the primary medium for all development, bug reporting, and pivotal discussions regarding the project's future, a practice also observed in other large Free Software projects. However, as a consequence of this decentralized development model, these emails are spread across hundreds of mailing lists, each with its own community and code-maintenance model.

This talk presents the LKML5Ws dataset ("the What, When, Who, Where, and Why in the Linux Kernel Mailing Lists"). With over 20 million emails from 345 different mailing lists, our massive relational dataset provides a comprehensive overview of the last 20 years of Linux kernel development. Beyond shedding light on the awe-inspiring number of patches, discussions, and contributors, our dataset serves as a basis for studying the intricate, knowledge-rich nature of free software development. We want to share and discuss this data, along with some visualizations, with the Debian community.

In his day-to-day work, the speaker is responsible, among other things, for ensuring the stable and secure operation of Debian servers at various companies.

However, there are frequent incidents where the speaker has to step in as a firefighter, whether to deal with malfunctioning services or servers, or even hacked companies.

We'll take a look at the factors that contribute to such emergency incidents, and how they might have been prevented.

In this talk we'll also examine tools and services which help to ensure the reliable operation of Debian servers.

Free as in Burned Out: who really pays for Open Source Software

Open Source powers nearly everything in our digital lives, from webservers to smartphones. In many ways, Open Source has "won." But can we celebrate that victory while so many maintainers, including many Debian Developers and Maintainers, are burning out, while users and companies keep depending on their unpaid labor?
Debian knows this tension intimately. From the recurring reality of orphaned packages and MIA developers, to the xz-utils backdoor, a stark reminder of what happens when critical infrastructure rests on a single volunteer's unpaid, unsupported labor, this isn't an abstract industry problem. It's our day-to-day.

In this talk, we'll take a critical look at how Open Source has been funded (or not), why many existing models like corporate sponsorship, donations, open core or paid support keep falling short, and what new paths might actually work. We'll also sit with the uncomfortable questions specific to a project like Debian: What happens when volunteer DDs and corporate-sponsored DDs work side by side on the same packages? Is it time for an Open Source tax? Would paying volunteers motivate or demotivate them, and who would decide who gets paid?

This isn't just a talk about money. It's a call to rethink what sustainability really means for Debian and for Open Source at large, and how we build a future that doesn't run on burnout.

Do we need to talk about funding specific projects within Debian?
How should we deal with "nagware" in Debian?
Any thoughts/ideas for the partners team in Debian?

After a quick introduction on these topics, we'll have an open discussion where anyone can share what's on their mind.

Abstraction Leaks: Why Understanding Linux Internals Still Matters

Modern software engineering heavily relies on abstractions: containers, cloud platforms, frameworks, and managed services. While these abstractions accelerate development, they often hide the underlying complexity of the system. This talk explores what happens when those abstractions break — and why understanding Linux internals becomes essential.

This session is aimed at developers, DevOps engineers, and newcomers to Debian who want to deepen their understanding of how systems actually work. Using real-world examples from networking, process management, and resource handling, we will explore how abstraction leaks manifest in production environments.

Attendees will leave with a clearer mental model of Linux systems, an appreciation for Debian’s philosophy of transparency and control, and practical insights on how to debug, reason about, and design more resilient systems by understanding what lies beneath the abstraction layers.

I have been working on improving Debian’s kernel and installer support for Chromebooks (Google’s very non-standard laptops) during the last years. At DebConf24 I have presented another talk titled [Debian on Chromebooks: What’s New and What’s Next?](https://debconf24.debconf.org/talks/73-debian-on-chromebooks-whats-new-and-whats-next/) where I gave an overview of what problems remain unsolved. I have managed to fix almost all of those, and with luck the low-level side of it will be finally complete by the time I hold this talk, so I’d like to give another status report on it.

[Apertis](https://www.apertis.org/) is a collaborative OS platform that includes
an operating system, but also tools and cloud services to optimize development
and increase reliability.
Targeting industrial embedded devices, Apertis is used, for instance, in the
[Atari VCS game console](https://atari.com/pages/atari-vcs)
and in the [Bosch D-tect 200 wall scanner](https://www.bosch-professional.com/gb/en/products/wallscanner-d-tect-200-c-0601081600).

This talk is a follow up from the [the one from Debconf25](https://debconf25.debconf.org/talks/127-whats-new-in-apertis-a-debian-derivative-tailored-for-industrial-embedded-devices/)
which will provide an overview of the differences between Apertis and Debian, covering everything from infrastructure to available packages and testing in real hardware.

We'll also discuss about the rebase on top of Debian Trixie which led to the
latest Apertis v2026 release.

Finally, we’ll highlight how our work in Apertis contributes back to Debian, in
line with its “Upstream First” policy - a full circle moment that some packages now available in Debian exist thanks to the work done in Apertis!

Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) have become an increasingly important topic, especially in the embedded systems domain, where products must comply with different regulatory and market requirements depending on their target regions.

This trend has intensified in recent years, particularly with the
introduction of the
[Cyber Resilience Act](https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/cyber-resilience-act),
which places greater responsibilities on product manufacturers regarding
the security and transparency of the software included in their products.

In this context, providing accurate and complete information about the
software running on a system is essential for several reasons:

Licensing and copyright: Software is subject to licensing obligations and
copyright regulations. Manufacturers must be able to identify the licenses
that apply to the software components they distribute, as well as the
corresponding copyright holders.

Security: New vulnerabilities are discovered every day. Accurately
identifying the exact versions of software components used in a product is
critical to assessing exposure to known vulnerabilities and understanding
potential security risks.

An SBOM provides the structured information required to address these
concerns by listing the software components included in a system along with
relevant metadata such as versions, licenses, and dependencies.

In this context, Debian already provides tooling to generate SBOMs, in
particular [sbom toolkit](https://packages.debian.org/source/sid/sbom-toolkit)
which provides a debhelper add-on and scripts to help developers to prepare
such reports.

Accurate SBOMs are critical for tracking security support, managing vulnerabilities effectively and correctly track component licenses. This session provides a short update on the current state of SBOM support within Debian. As a second part of the session, we will open the floor for a BoF discussion aimed to identify gaps and how to improve the overall SBOM support.

Since 2022 We have talked at DebConf reporting the activities of Debian community in Brazil. For us, this moment has been important to be accountable for our work, especially when it involves financial support from Debian.

We will talk about the activities we have done since DebConf25 (2025/2026) sush as:
- The organization and the numbers of MiniDebConf Campinas 2026: https://campinas.mini.debconf.org
- The work done by Brazilian Localization and Brazilian Developer Teams: how we work, what areas of work we have, how we split the tasks, how we bring new contributors.

We believe that sharing our Brazilian experiencies, We will encourage other Debian communities around the world to organize their activies and bring their experiencies to future DebConfs. Together we can exchange ideas, experiencies, sucess cases, and so on.

We would like to use this space to listen the audience and return to Brazil with new ideias.

This presentation has two goals:

I will present what Debian Day is, Its importance to the Debian community, and why the event should take place in various cities around the world. The first goal is to ensure that those attending the presentation return to their cities with renewed enthusiasm to organize Debian Day with their local communities.

The second objective is to report on the work we have done in Brazil in 2024 and 2025, When we created a group of local organizers to jointly request financial assistance from DPL to cover the expenses in each city. The Debian funding was used to pay for coffee breaks, cakes, produce graphic materials such as banners, flyers, stickers, etc. I will show other cities can follow this idea and request assistance from DPL. Thanks to this work, we had a record number of Brazilian cities organizing Debian Day in 2025: 15.

Debian prides itself on being the "Universal Operating System", but modern technology still imposes Portuguese or Spanish as a prerequisite for using computers in South America. This linguistic barrier accelerates the cultural erasure and silencing of diverse communities. We believe free software is the only ecosystem capable of reversing this scenario, promoting true technological sovereignty and linguistic preservation.
In this talk, we present the initial stages of the Jupy Project, which aims to implement native support for Native South American languages like Kaingang, Nheengatu, Guarani, and Ticuna in Linux. Using the Lux Lenovo OS (a Debian-based distro) as a practical laboratory, we will share technical localization obstacles, such as creating glibc locales, keyboard mapping, and font rendering.
Our goal is to open a transparent dialogue about our main challenges: ensuring continuous maintenance and respectfully validating interfaces with the speaking communities. We invite the global Debian community to help us build architectural solutions and upstream contribution workflows that make Linux genuinely accessible to native languages.

I’d like to gather people with system administration experience, especially in the professional field. The purpose is to share our experiences working with Debian(-derivatives), and to highlight differences, especially depending on our local legal contexts (e.g., what does being on call means for you and for the law you depend on).

On Monday, 1999-01-04, Jeremie Miller released the first version of jabberd.
So Jabber (or XMPP as it is called nowadays) is almost as old as Debian!

I'll give an abstract on what Jabber/XMPP is, where it is in use today, and why it still matters.

Then I'll give an overview of Jabber/XMPP packages in Debian.

One thing that annoys me quite frequently when doing Debian-related development is having to manually resolve conflicts on the debian/changelog file every time the upstream code gets updated. Changelogs appear to have a simple format: a series of entries each with a few independent lines per change. Fixing merge conflicts should be automatic and invisible. I should never get an email from Salsa for a debian/changelog conflict in my merge requests just because the maintainer added a new change or finalized an entry. Maybe except in extreme cases.

One would expect git to handle these conflicts gracefully, but it simply gives up when seeing a context mismatch, which happens almost every time. Even worse, it will happily and silently merge changes into an already released changelog entry. There is dpkg-mergechangelogs, but it's fundamentally the wrong tool to use because it assumes finalized non-conflicting version numbers and changelog entries, the opposite of what happens in development e.g. when rebasing your changes onto upstream packaging.

Eventually I got annoyed enough to start writing something that can properly merge debian/changelog files. It's not as simple as it sounds, and my affinity to find edge cases makes it worse. In the talk I'll try to define the problem domain, highlight some weird cases with life-like examples, and demonstrate spooky action at a distance. I don't know if the merge driver itself will be finished in time for the talk, in which case this will also serve as a request for help.

Technical Presentation

If you maintain Go related packages. You’ve seen the error: Package A needs B, but B needs A.

In the Go world, this is becoming the "normal" for core libraries as Go’s modular designs for a world of "get the latest" but Debian still lives in a world of "builds in order from source".

Let's see how we can clear the path easily with Go and go.mod itself to resolving the Go Circular Build-Dependencies in Debian.

When a modern Go package is added to Debian, it should just work. But what if a perfectly compiled binary fails with a "404 Not Found" error that nobody can explain?

After our investigation: We found Debian’s Go infrastructure is trapped Bookworm, Trixie and also Forky in Time Travel to 2011. Can we rescue "Forky" (Debian 14) Go back to the present and to be ready for the future?

We have the fine tradition of having DebConf N share their experiences with DebConf N+1. The DebConf committee will also be present and we invite a core member of every team to come around and help with the knowledge transfer.

The session will begin with a DebConf27 presentation.

This is a BoF session around [the Debian loong64 port](https://wiki.debian.org/Ports/loong64) that intends to help people interested in the port to:

* get familiar with each other,
* keep each other updated with latest development in the port, and
* discuss and plan about the port's Debian 14 debut release next year.

The unaffiliated community people will be present; we're still waiting for official confirmation from Loongson teams regarding whether they will attend. We may arrange for them to participate on-line.

You may use Mandarin or English – several participants and I will be able to interpret if necessary.

The event likely will not be recorded; if you want to video-tape the session, ask the audience for permission first.
